Best vegan Oreo alternatives. In this post, I wanted to share with you 12 of the best vegan Oreo alternatives available on the market. Oreos hold the title of the world’s best-selling cookie. Around 92 million Oreo Cookies are sold each day around the world. That is a lot of cookies. But are Oreos vegan and what exactly are the vegan Oreo alternatives available?
What Are The Best Vegan Oreo Alternatives
As a general rule the following brands make the best vegan Oreo alternatives:
- Hydrox Cookies;
- Catalina Crunch Keto Cookies (Chocolate, Vanilla & Peanut Butter)
- Newman’s Own Organics (Chocolate, Mint Creme, Vanilla & Peanut Butter)
- Lenny & Larry’s Sandwich Cookies (Chocolate & Vanilla)
- Simple Mills Creme Sandwich Cookies (Peanut Butter & Cocoa Creme)
Are Oreos 100% Vegan?
Oreos do not contain any animal-based ingredients. In fact, PETA has claimed in the past that Oreos are “accidentally vegan”. Many vegans consume Oreo cookies.
However, technically Oreo cookies are not 100% vegan. The main two issues are cross-contamination and sugar.
Oreos are made on the same production line as some non-vegan products so there is always the chance of cross-contamination. However, cross-contamination is hard to avoid as a vegan – there is always the chance within all non-exclusively vegan factories or restaurants.
The second non-vegan issue with Oreos is sugar. Sugar here in the US is often processed with bone char (essentially charred animal bones) to give it a white appearance. The only sugar that cannot have been processed with bone char is sugar marked as beet, organic or raw.
The biggest problem with sugar is that it is so hard to trace whether sugar has been processed with bone char or not. Often manufacturers don’t even know if the sugar they are using is processed with bone char or not.
Because cross-contamination and sugar are so hard to avoid, many vegans are comfortable consuming Oreos – it totally depends on your comfort level.

Certified Vegan Oreo Cookie Alternatives
In this post, I will be presenting you with 12 Oreos alternatives that are certified vegan or are listed as vegan on their Amazon listing. The only thing to note is that they all contain palm oil/shortening. Palm oil itself is vegan and so a product that contains palm oil can still be certified vegan. However, due to the environmental impact of palm oil, some vegans avoid it.
Simple Mills *asterisk* on their packaging that the organic palm shortening is sustainably sourced.
Newman’s Own also states that the organic palm fruit oil they use is sustainably sourced from Colombia. I will leave it to your discretion as to whether you are comfortable with this or not. At this point, it is worth noting that Whole Foods 365 has a cookie sandwich that does not contain palm oil BUT they may contain “milk and eggs” – so there are cross-contamination issues.
You can see the listing for yourself on Amazon here.
Are All Types of Oreos Vegan?
Not all types of Oreo equivalents are vegan. Some Oreo alternatives contain dairy. Some Oreo alternatives contain sugar or are processed in the same factory as non-vegan items. Also, some Oreo alternatives do not contain any non-vegan ingredients, but the manufacturer does not want to claim they are vegan for whatever reason.
Is There Any Non-Vegan Oreos?
There are non-vegan Oreos on the market so always make sure to check the ingredients.
What Can I Substitute For Oreos?
