It is one of my favorite Chinese-style sauces and glazes – a great combination of sweet and bitter. However, if you are vegan you need to be particularly careful in picking the Hoisin sauce you use, as not all are always vegan (for reasons I will explain below). What are the Best Store-Bought Vegan Hoisin Sauces?
As a general rule, the best vegan Hoisin sauces are –

Is Hoisin Sauce Vegan Friendly?
As a general rule, a lot of Hoisin sauces are vegan. The main ingredients in Hoisin sauce that may be unsuitable for strict vegans are:
- artificial colors and these are tested on animals; and
- cane sugar that may be processed with bone char.

First up is an amazing Hoisin sauce from Fix. This Hoisin sauce does not contain sugar and is instead sweetened with dates. That means, no bone-char concerns here then. It is also organic, gluten-free, and packs a punch as it contains fresh red chili peppers.
Fix Hoisin sauce is labeled as certified vegan on the front of the bottle. Love.

Next up is an organic Hoisin sauce from 365 by Whole Foods Market. Not only is this Hoisin sauce marked as vegan on the bottle it is also USDA-certified organic. You can find this vegan organic Hoisin sauce on Amazon here.
3. Premier Japan Organic Hoisin Sauce
Next up is another organic hoisin sauce – this time from Premier Japan. This Hoisin sauce is marked as vegan on the front of the label (amazing) and it is also gluten-free. You can find Premier Japan vegan Hoisin sauce on Amazon here.
4. Lucky Foods Organic Hoisin Sauce
This Hoisin sauce from Lucky Foods is marked as vegan, organic, and gluten-free on the front of the bottle. You can try Lucky Foods’ organic Hoisin sauce on Amazon here.
5. Starport Foods Classic Hoisin Sauce
If you are looking for a vegan Hoisin sauce in bulk, then this Hoisin sauce from Starport Foods may be for you. This Hoisin sauce isn’t marked in the bottle as vegan but its Amazon listing does list it as “vegan”.

Next up is this Hoisin sauce from none other than Sprouts. Sprouts are always great at stocking lots of awesome vegan products and this Hoisin sauce is no exception. This Hoisin sauce is listed as vegan on the Instacart listing and quite frankly the usage is worth buying just for the pretty bottle alone.

Is Kikkoman hoisin sauce vegan?
Kikkoman does not market their Hoisin sauce as “vegan”. Looking at the ingredient list I can tell you that there are not any obvious non-vegan ingredients in Kikkoman’s hoisin sauce. The only ingredient that may not be completely vegan is sugar as it could have been processed with bone char. This is not clear – so for this reason I did not include it in my list of recommended seven above.

Is Lee Kum Kee Hoisin Sauce vegan?
Lee Kum Kee Hoisin sauce is not marketed as “vegan”. There are two potentially non-vegan ingredients. The first is red 40 artificial color which could have been tested on animals and the second is sugar which could have been processed with bone char. For these reasons, I did not include this in my recommended list of seven vegan hoisin sauces above.

The best store-bought vegan hoisin sauces. Hoisin sauce is one of my favorite things to use in food or just as a condiment. The great news is that if you are vegan, it is not a food option you have to avoid. There are plenty of vegan-friendly hoisin sauces available in grocery stores and online. My recommendation would be to pick Fix Hot Hoisin Sauce which is the only option on the list that is certified vegan.
